PONDERING

I am literally just back from Chicago. My head is spinning with the ideas that were brought into focus at the International Catholic Stewardship Conference – Stewardship and Evangelization. A few random thoughts:

  • There is something positively uplifting to be part of a Eucharistic celebration with 15 bishops, seventy-five priests, some vested and some sitting out in the pews and about 900 dedicated believers. The singing and the responses melded everyone into a community of faith. Although most of those gathered were strangers there was a sense that we were brothers and sisters.
  • That almost everyone received from the cup was a very powerful sign.
  • One of the talks was entitled “From Starbucks to Stewardship.” Not only was the title clever the talk was creative and thought producing.
  • One speaker boiled Stewardship down to one sentence – “God wants one hour of worship, one hour of service and one hour of pay each week.”
  • Another speaker offered a suggestion on how we can develop the “attitude of gratitude” – when someone asks you how you are don’t say, “Fine,” say, “I am blessed.”
  • Still another speaker used a quote (a favorite of John Soares) from the rite of ordination for a deacon. When the bishop gives the soon to be ordained deacon the Book of the Gospels he says, “Believe what you read, teach what you believe and practice what you teach.”
  • The trick to good leadership is to organize so that things that are urgent, but not important, don’t prevent you from dealing with the things that are important, but not urgent.
  • Another is when things are going well, be a window so you can see and thank all who made things work. When things go bad, be a mirror and take the blame.

  • One quote had nothing to do with Stewardship but was very insightful. One of the speakers said that when Mo Udall (member of the House of Representatives from Arizona’s 2nd district) who, when he was dying, was asked if he had any last requests said, “I want to be buried in Chicago so I can be politically active after I’m dead.”
  • One of the talks was entitled “The Bottomless Cup of Christian Hospitality.” A few minutes before the session was to begin, the moderator was frantic because the speaker was nowhere to be found. When she finally introduced the speaker, I realized it was the woman I had seen outside the room sitting by herself ignoring the people coming to her talk while listening to her Ipod. I stayed but listened with jaundiced ears.

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY

This weekend, World Mission Sunday, all baptized Catholics gather to celebrate our missionary vocation and to offer prayers and sacrifices for the missionary task. Two-thirds of the very first collection of the Propagation of Faith in 1822 was sent to the Church in the United States – to the vast diocese of Louisiana and Bardstown, KY. Today, more than 1150 young churches of Asia Africa, the Pacific Islands and Latin America have these same needs. Your generosity through the Propagation of the Faith will reach those who await the “Good News” of Jesus, who long to experience His hope and love. Please be as generous as possible.

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT

The bishops’ pastoral letter on stewardship reminds us, “Jesus not only calls people to him but also forms them and sends them out in his service. Being sent on a mission is a consequence of being a disciple.”
