Bishop Roque
was an excellent presider. He was gentle with both
his homily and his presence. Yes, he is a bishop, but it was clear that he had
not lost sight of the fact that he is one of the faithful. Some bishops are
better at that than others. He was friendly and supportive before the ceremony;
he was himself during the ceremony and he was most gracious at the reception
and photo session that followed. It takes a special person to do that. As a
military chaplain and then bishop, it was clear that he had been part of a
wonderful variety of Òlocal communitiesÓ and that he was anxious to respect the
unique attributes of our local community.
Those
confirmed were obviously well prepared. Georgann Lardaro and her teachers and group discussion leaders did
an excellent job. It does not take a genius to figure out that 15- and
16-year-old Catholics are a group that requires special treatment. We are very
fortunate to have what I consider the best Confirmation program in the diocese.
I want to thank Georgann and her crew for a job well
done.
The
Confirmation class of 2009 is a wonderful group of emerging Catholics. Some
have their doubts; all have their questions. Nevertheless, they all stepped
forward and said, ÒI am ready to profess my faith and my faith commitment at
this most difficult time in my life. In some cases I know the struggles that
had to be overcome; in other cases I donÕt have a clue. I was proud of them one
and all. They responded with great enthusiasm. They renewed my confidence that the
Church of the future is in good hands. Thank you newly confirmed.
At
the reception, I was able to see the signs of relief in the eyes and faces of
the parents of the newly confirmed. I can only guess what obstacles had to be
overcome for Confirmation to happen in their family. We can have the best
program in the diocese but without the cooperation and faith witness of parents
all our work would be for naught. Thank you parents for your faith witness,
patience and perseverance. You do a great job at what is sometimes an unappreciated
role.

CATHOLIC CHARITY FUND APPEAL
The Catholic Charity Fund Appeal will be wrapping up at the end of
June. We still need 111 families/individuals to contribute to reach our goal
of 50% participation. As our
first year as co-chairs comes to a conclusion we are so grateful and astounded
by those families who have participated. Your generosity in difficult economic
times is a testament to our commitment at Christ the King to act on our baptismal
vows. If you have not participated yet, it is not too late. Envelopes are at
the doors of the church and can be dropped in the collection basket.
Thank you for your prayerful consideration!

THE CATHOLIC COMMUNICATION
CAMPAIGN COLLECTION
The
Catholic Communication Campaign Collection (CCC) helps the Diocese spread the
Gospel message through different media channels, including locally produced
Catholic television programs, the diocesan web site www.dioceseofprovidence.org and free monthly electronic newsletter,
supporting the efforts of the diocesan newspaper, the RI Catholic, and providing assistance to parishes, schools and
agencies throughout the diocese. Please consider a generous gift to the second collection benefiting
the Catholic Communication Campaign at Masses on June 13 & 14. Thank you!
